Save money by self-catering in Cornwall in 2012

According to The Times travel pages, self-catering UK breaks will be all the rage this year as families economise in tough times. Also, a survey by TravelSupermarket suggests that a third of all holidays this year will be in self-catering properties.

Having a holiday to look forward to is just as important as ever in this challenging economic climate, but it doesn’t have to be an expensive trip to the Caribbean to refresh and revitalise you. Cornwall offers some of the most breathtaking scenery, stunning beaches and top food – and it’s only a car journey away.

To do our bit and as a thank you to all our loyal guests, we’re keeping our prices for 2012 the same as last year, despite an increase in running costs due to cleaning and utility bills etc.

Poppies and Sorrel Cottage are among the best value in our local area for families, while West Creek Cottage offers couples on their own or with one child a cosy base for touring the area at a very affordable price. With rates starting at under £300 per week, that works out at less than £20 per person per night – including linen, towels and parking.

Please visit the other pages on our website to find out more about our cottages in Padstow. We hope to welcome you soon.

The joy of wetsuits

Now that the weather is turning decidedly autumnal, the idea of going in the Cornish sea on our October half term break is a little less appealing.

wetsuits, body boards and boots

Poppies' courtyard is ideal for drying wetsuits

However, gone are the days when you would almost feel your blood freeze as you took to the waves dressed only in a swimming costume.  Nowadays, the Cornwall beaches are awash with people dressed head to foot in black neoprene!

Yes, the wetsuit has transformed a trip to the seaside for many families, ours included.  Of course serious surfers have long since worn all the layers and even headgear but now we’ve all got them, long-leg or short-leg and even boots and gloves.

Trying to squeeze yourself, and the children, into the black synthetic rubber outfits is never a joyful experience, and walking across Constantine Bay or the beach at Harlyn fully clad in neoprene is hardly a fashion statement, but it’s all worthwhile when you take to the water in October or even February.

Around Padstow and the seven bays there are lots of places to hire or buy wetsuits and we have holiday cottages with gardens where you can hang them to dry after a day out.

We’ll never be competing at Fistral Beach but at least we keep warm!

A personal service

When you’re choosing a holiday cottage to rent, the first thing most people consider is location.  Cornwall cottages prove a popular choice because they are surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscape the UK has to offer, and Padstow, where our holiday homes are located, is an undisputed jewel among Cornish towns.

Most guests want to be able to park near their holiday homes, not just for unloading cases, but also returning after a full day by the coast or visiting the pretty towns and villages nearby.  Facilities such as comfy rooms, well-equipped kitchens, hot water, and TV and DVD players are also a must.  Our cottages have parking, modern facilities and home comforts.

And I’m sure all of us would agree, it’s great if you don’t have to bring your own bedding or towels – or add them to your piles of washing at the end of the holiday!  For that reason, linen and towels are included in our prices.

Here at Cornish Seaside Cottages we have worked hard to provide holiday cottages that are a real home-from-home.  We’re a family business, not a big agency, and we offer a truly personal service to our guests.  We hope to welcome you soon to Poppies, Sorrel Cottage and West Creek Cottage.

Come to Cornwall for Christmas

Cornish beaches are just as beautiful in winter - and less crowded!

The moment August Bank Holiday is over,  the supermarkets start bringing in their Christmas ranges.  It drives me mad, but I know I should plan ahead and not leave everything to the last minute again this year.

With that in mind, why not consider spending the festive season in a Padstow holiday cottage at Christmas?  Our cottages are cosy bases for family get-togethers, you can get a Tesco grocery delivery and our fantastic beaches are perfect for a walk to lose some of those excess calories.  You might even escape a visit from the in-laws.

We currently have good availability on our cottages over Christmas and New Year.  This year, we are looking at changeover day on Thursday 22 and 29 December so that our hard-working cleaners get a bit of time off too.

Poppies (sleeps 6) is £625 for a week, Sorrel Cottage (sleeps 4) is £495 and West Creek Cottage (sleeps 3) is £420.  And if you mention our Christmas special offer when you call, you’ll get £25 off.

Just remember Christmas is coming … don’t leave it too late!

About Cornish Seaside Cottages

Cornish Seaside Cottages is a small family business run by me – Diana Harris -and my husband Andrew.  We started coming back to Cornwall in the 1990s when our eldest daughter was small and our second was on the way.  We fell in love with the beaches and spectacular scenery of the North Cornish coast and the harbour town of Padstow.

We started returning every year as our family grew from one to four girls, staying in different cottages, but keeping one eye on the estate agents windows in between making sandcastles and buying ice cream.

When the opportunity arose to buy Poppies in 2002 – then little more than a cowshed in the midst of conversion – we leapt at it.  Sorrel Cottage followed soon after and in 2010 we added West Creek Cottage in nearby Little Petherick to our portfolio.

We now have both traditional and modern properties - although the modern were once old farm buildings - and can accommodate guests ranging from couples to groups of up to 10 (if you book Poppies and Sorrel Cottage together).

We hope to welcome you soon!

Travellers from near and far

Most of the visitors to our holiday cottages in Padstow and Little Petherick are from the UK but, thanks to the Internet, word is spreading far around the globe.

Amazingly, Australia is now the number one overseas country, with West Creek and Sorrel Cottage both hosting holiday-makers from down under this year alone.  We’ve also had visitors from Germany and Ireland in recent months.

Of course, Newquay International Airport means it’s a lot easier to fly to Cornwall than it used to be, but most visitors still come on holiday to Cornwall by road.  One guest who lives near John O’Groats chose our holiday cottage in Padstow for summer 2011, even though it meant driving virtually from one end of the UK to the other!

The Atlantic coastline, famous surfing beaches, Rick Stein’s restaurants and popular days out like the Eden Project and Tintagel are just a few of the reasons why North Cornwall has become one of the UK’s top self-catering holiday destinations.

For me, driving 5 hours from Northampton in a Land Rover sometimes seems a very long way, but as soon as we arrive, take in those great views and breathe the sea air, the magic of Cornwall wins us over every time.

Can you walk to Padstow?

The question we are asked more than any other is this – how close are the cottages to Padstow and can you walk there?  So this seemed the perfect subject for our first FAQ post.

The answer is that Poppies and Sorrel Cottage are less than a mile from the harbour, which means that it’s only a 15 minute walk to all the Padstow shops and restaurants.  It’s only fair to point out that walking to town is easy because it’s downhill.  On the way back uphill, especially after a good meal, it might take a bit longer!  And the pavement disappears toward the end, so take a torch.

Meadow Court, the location of Poppies and Sorrel, appealed to us because each self-catering holiday cottage has two parking spaces, which are rare in Padstow.  When you’ve got kids, it’s great to be able unload easily after a long day at the beach, rather than competing with other cars for that one space on a narrow side road.  It’s easy to get into town from the cottages, but just as important to be able to get back to the peace and quiet of Meadow Court at the end of a great evening.

West Creek Cottage in Little Petherick is 10 minutes drive from Padstow but you can walk there along the Saints Way and the Camel Trail while enjoying some great views at the same time. Probably not best done at night, but luckily there are some local taxi firms just a phone call away.
