Alex fixes it for The Chough Bakery

Delicious Cornish pasties from The Chough bakery
Our favourite Padstow pasty shop The Chough Bakery got the TV treatment when it called on the services of BBC Two’s The Fixer Alex Polizzi.
Alex has turned her no-nonsense approach to struggling family businesses and wanted boss Elaine, daughter Luisa and the rest of The Chough team to put bickering and rivalry aside to concentrate on making their bakery successful all year round.
After delivering some slightly painful home truths, Alex helped the family pull together and the programme ended on a high – with Rick Stein and Port Isaac singers Fisherman’s Friends joining in the celebrations.
It made for riveting viewing and more importantly has given The Chough a shop window nationwide. If watching made you feel hungry, you’ll be pleased to know that the award-winning Cornish pasties can be ordered online for home delivery. You can also get a delicious Cornish cream tea delivered to your door.
Well done to the Chough for being brave enough to let Alex and the cameras in and wishing you every success in 2012.

Christmas comes early
Visitors to Padstow in early December might be surprised to find the town overrun (literally) with Santas.
The Padstow Fun Run on Saturday 3 December will see runners of all ages and levels of fitness putting on their santa suits and taking part in a one or two mile dash to raise money for Cornwall Hospice Care.
The run starts from the bandstand at 1pm and is open to men, women, boys and girls. There will be festive music at the start, and mince pies and a warm drink to greet runners when they finish. Organisers are hoping to attract 1000 ‘Santas’ at their three locations across the county.
Even if you don’t want to run, this weekend is a great time to visit Padstow because it’s also the 4th Christmas Festival when the harbour town comes alive with celebrity chefs, traditional markets and festive fun. More details to follow soon on the blog.
There’s still availability at our holiday cottages to enjoy this pre-Christmas celebration and see the harbour town full of festive cheer. For great accommodation in Padstow contact us now. You’d be mad to miss it.

Coffee break with a difference
Down at Constantine Bay, there’s a coffee shop with a difference – the wonderful Coastal Coffee. This fantastic little van will brew you up a delicious latte, cappucino or hot chocolate to warm you after a bracing walk or dip in the sea. In my opinion, it’s almost worth the trip on its own – just sit, enjoy your coffee and take in the sweeping views of this fabulous beach!

The truth about Cornish Yarg
One of our regular foodie treats when visiting Cornwall is Yarg Cheese - a creamy semi-hard cheese easily identified by its coating of nettle leaves.
Like many people, I assumed that its unusual name was an old Cornish word but recently discovered that it is simply the name of its creators, cheesemakers Allan and Jenny Gray, spelt backwards!
The Grays produced the cheese from a recipe dating back to the 13th century on their farm near Bodmin Moor and the nettle jacket was originally intended to aid preserving and as a mould ripening agent, although it also gives the cheese a distinctive flavour.
Just to reassure you, the nettles are edible - the leaves are frozen to remove the sting before being brushed on by hand. Let us know what you think of this local delicacy!

Vote for Cornish food
To commemorate British Food Fortnight’s 10th Anniversary, the website Love British Food is inviting you to vote for your top food spot in Britain.
Voting is now open and the winner will be announced at the start of this year’s British Food Fortnight (17 Sept – 2 Oct 2011).
Voting is between the various English counties, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland. Will it be London with its world class restaurants, Yorkshire – home of the Sunday roast – or Somerset, the home of Cheddar cheese and cider?
Of course we are slightly biased here and think that Cornwall, with its wealth of small producers, Cornish pasties, clotted cream, fresh fish and specialist cheese, deserves to be top of the pile.
For more information to give you ‘food for thought’ and to vote for your top food spot, just click on the link.
Come on Britain, get voting!
